How many places do you know in the world where you can go skiing in the morning and play golf in the afternoon? This scene is very real in Bulgaria, Bansko, where in winter months the weather can be warm enough to hit some golf balls and still have snow covered slopes on the mountain.
The golf experience is enabled by the picturesque Pirin Golf Hotel, in which we spent the New Years Eve and welcomed the new year. The NYE party was amazing, filled with traditional Bulgarian live music and food. However since we woke up to a sunny day, we couldn’t spend it recovering from the party. Rather, we quickly put on our skiing gear and headed up to the mountain. The sun was shining and the snow was sparkling. Pirin’s peak Todorka gave us the most magnificent view of the whole scenery including the three mountains Pirin, Rila and Rhodopes.
The highest peak at 2746m above sea level is usually an accessible privilege on clear, non windy days and gives the opportunity for a high intensity skiing down the slopes (long 1821m) all the way to the village. This would leave even the experienced skier eager for a spa time.
The unique spirit of Bansko are the traditional Mehanas, with live Bulgarian music and fresh food from the mountain. We frequented a mehana each day of our stay, tasted many traditional delicacies and seeing that the live music group were fulfilling musical wishes we sang along to the song Еделвајс.
The unique location of Bansko being almost in between the three mountains Pirin, Rila and Rhodopes was described in the song old hundreds of years. The last days of our trip werent as sunny as you can see in the pictures and we managed to have an exciting skiing session during a blizzard. It’s an amazing destination and we look forward to visiting again.
